HILARY EMERSON LAY

Hilary, who hails from Cape Cod, graduated from Emerson College with a BFA in Writing, Literature and Publishing. While at Emerson, she studied Children’s Book Writing and Illustration and minored in illustration by taking classes at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and the Massachusetts College of Art.

Hilary’s quirky artwork tends to reflect her love of children’s book illustration and captures her fondness for playfulness and color. She finds inspiration everywhere, from dreams to the grocery store to nature to books to (yes) even television. She tends to work in acrylic on canvas, usually over a layer of newsprint, and has lately taken to using buttons, ribbon, shards of glass, and her own black-and-white photographs collaged into her pieces. Although her style is consistent, her technique is constantly evolving.

Hilary loves language and thinks that few things are as beautiful as the printed word on a page. She often incorporates text from poetry and quotations into her artwork. Among the many artists and writers who inspire her are Trina Schart Hyman, e.e.cummings, Timothy Basil Ering, Claudine Hellmuth, Shel Silverstein, Shaun Tan and Naomi Shihab Nye.

Hilary lives and works on Boston’s North Shore.
